The Polish Arabian Horse… has a grand history of achieved athleticism. The Polish State Studs have had a regimented policy of “testing” the quality of both the physical and the mental Athlete. Only the BEST… can achieve acceptance to the Michalow, Janov & Bialka Breeding Programs. To be a successful Race Horse has been of great importance. To be a “brave” and “courageous” racer is the ultimate necessity.
From the great Programs of the Polish Stud Farms… the Arabian Horse Breed’s GREATEST Performance Athletes AND most aesthetic visions have come.
*EMIGRANT… the outstanding breeding Stallion… was the pride of his great generation… elevating him to the position of Chief Sire to Michalow, Janov and Bialka State Breeding Farms… for twelve years.
The decision… bringing *EMIGRANT to the United States… was the result of the persistent desire of Manny Vierra to acquire this essential phenotype & genotype to his aggressively developing Valley Oak Arabians Breeding Program. *EMIGRANT… was clearly the result of a determined Breeder who sought the necessary link to his Breeding Philosophy.

*EMIGRANT: An Epic Journey… of Inherent Excellence
--Story by RJ Adams ©2012
The Stallion *EMIGRANT… has behind him multiple institutions of ethnic & cultural substance… and, a tradition of their most aesthetic styles. For this epic Stallion… the tradition is broad, and strictly compelling… compounded by names and events… chronicled deeply in the annals of history.
The turn into the third decade of the Twentieth Century… brought great turmoil to Central Europe. The creation of the Soviet Union with a Bolshevik (Communist) government was blustered by the expressions of grand, yet prejudiced military power that would widen into this third decade of the century. Hitler’s Germany was emerging as an unstoppable army advocating extermination… of both the ethnic human… and the Arabian Horse. This human conflict contained far reaching political and ethnic corollary that would transcend and impact the most prestigious Arabian Horse breeding programs of the governments of three continents… and, cause the expatriation of the Arabian Horses of the Polish Stud Farms to the Russian breeding farm TERSK. The latter… would greatly affect the future development of the Arabian Horse Breed… globally.

To the Egyptian Agricultural Organization (EAO)… it was a sincere gesture of appreciation for the Russian assistance in the construction of the Aswan High Dam that gifted the Arabian Stallions *NIL and *ASWAN (*Nil’s replacement after his untimely death) to the people of the Soviet Union/Russia. The Egyptian Government’s purpose, initially, had no more meaning than a tradition of gratitude for financial and engineering assistance. What it would become… was the fateful act that would forever effect and direct the history of the global Arabian Horse Breed.
To the Russian Breeders… it was the reception of the Saklawi I strain Stallion *ASWAN and his use… at the Tersk State Stud… that would prove highly impactful to the Arabian Horse Breed. *Aswan’s most significant son was the Tersk born Stallion *PALAS. His genetic importance was in that he was, also, the son of a daughter of the EAO bred Stallion *NIL, who was the short lived original Aswan Dam gift of appreciation to Russia.
The Saklawi I line-bred *PALAS’ purchase by the Polish Government would set the stage for the development of the “Diamond Cross” (*PALAS bred to Negatiw blood; primarily through Bandos daughters) so valued today… and the inclusion of another very strong source of Poland’s Saklawi I blood.
To the Poles… The “Iron Curtain”, surrounding the Eastern Europe Communist Block of countries… presented insurmountable restrictions to their available source of importations of new blood to their program. History and fate, again would play significant parts in the development of the future Arabian Breed. Egypt’s gift of *ASWAN to Russia… would prove to be of great significance! The birth of *PALAS… set the stage for one of the most historic purchases recorded in Arabian Horse annals. So… *PALAS, carrying the genetics so strongly desired & needed by the Poles… was, in a way, a re-taking… of the lost wealth of blood that was so egregiously taken from them with the invasion by the Soviet Union and the Soviet occupation. Not a re-gathering of the “stolen” blood… but, the acquisition of what the Poles needed most… launching a new beginning toward post World War II breeding prosperity. His significance as a contribution to the Pole’s breeding philosophy… would prove to be outstanding… in that his Saklawi I blood was far removed from that of the generations of established Polish Broodmares he would service. It was a comfortable multi-generational “out-cross” of genetics… that would earn *PALAS the acclaimed title: “Sire of Champions”.

All accounted for… the cultural bending journey of the Egyptian bred *ASWAN to Russia (1963); his Russian born son *PALAS’ purchase by Poland (1973) and the *PALAS son and Janov bred ARARAT… being anointed by the renowned Michalow Stud Director Ignacy Jaworosky as the mate of the great Michalow Mare EMIGRANTKA… for the clear purpose of creating a special colt… *EMIGRANT.

So began the migration of the great breeding Stallion *EMIGRANT to dedicated breeder Manny Vierra’s California, USA breeding farm… Valley Oak Arabians… where a new era of an epic story… will be written.

The MATRIARCHAL Line: (Emigracja/Emigrantka)
The Maternal Influence: the Beloved Ladies
--Story by Jeffrey Wintersteen (Arabian Horse World) ©2012
*EMIGRANT’s story began on an unremarkable and cold winter night. On January 30, 1991 this eagerly anticipated colt was foaled in southeastern Poland at Michałów State Stud. He was the second offspring from the stud’s beloved Emigrantka (Eukaliptus x Emigracja by *Palas). Emigrantka was Polish and European Champion Mare, but perhaps more importantly, a daughter of the “Pearl of Michałów”, Emigracja. While the colt named *EMIGRANT was bred to be the heir to the Saklawi I sire-line on Polish soil, more importantly he carried the lofty expectations as the first significant sire from the family of Emigracja. But, to fully appreciate the Poles’ hopes and aspirations for *EMIGRANT, a bit of history is necessary.
Michałów State Stud, formerly Klemonsow in the Zamość area, was re-located Near Pińczów in 1953, under the breeding direction of Ignacy Jaworowski. While Janów Podlaski is renowned for the Kuhailan strained phenotype and genotype, Director Jaworowski preferred the Saklawi type, known for supreme beauty and refinement. His success with this strain began with the mare line Milordka, imported from the desert to Poland’s Sławuta Stud in 1810. The foundress of this family at Michałów was the Klemonsow-bred Estokada, an Oaks and Criterium race winner who made the Michałów “E family” world famous. Estokada and her beautiful *Naborr daughter Eskapada are responsible for the following European and U.S. Champions tracing via direct dam line: Estebna, *Eros, *Eter, *Elkana, *Elkin, *Ericca, Endel, Egina, Esklawa, Estarda, Ekstern, and Esparto to name just a few. But perhaps the genetic prepotency of this mare line is best represented in the family branch of Estokada’s great granddaughter Emigracja.

Consider for example that five modern U.S. National Champions that boast the dam line tracing to Emigracja: Elandra, El Dorada, Emandoria, Emanor and El Mundo. One could also include Embra for her World Cup Championship in Vegas. Emigracja’s influence at the Aachen, European and World Championships is even more extensive adding to those already mentioned Emigrantka, Emanacja, Emilda, Emmona, Emira, Emanda, and, of course, *EMIGRANT.
Certainly, of the Emigracja progeny, Emigrantka was one of the most beloved. Sadly, her breeding career was cut short by an untimely loss in 2002 due to colic. It is important to note that Emigrantka, along with her successful full sisters Emanacja and Elandra, were the result of a breeding strategy that Director Jaworowski used to great success, the crossing of the Saklawi I sire-line, via Tersk-bred Palas, with the Ibrahim sire-line via Negatiw/Bandos. This cross was so successful that it was referred to as the “Diamond Cross” and is a pillar of Polish breeding. For Emigrantka’s second foal this breeding philosophy was repeated upon itself, as both parents were already of this cross. The result was the spectacular *EMIGRANT.
In addition to *EMIGRANT, Emigrantka produced El Dorada: Polish Junior and Senior Champion Mare, U.S. National Champion Mare, All Nations Cup Champion, European Junior and Senior Champion, Mare World Reserve Champion Mare, and, as well as champions El Mundo, Edeon and Erald. Recently El Dorado returned to the show ring to win a Silver Medal at the all important Aachen in 2012.
There was little question when *EMIGRANT was foaled that he would replace his sire as the progenitor of the Saklawi I sire-line. The Saklawi I sire-line was instrumental to introducing type and desert qualities to the Polish program. This was initially done via *Palas, and *EMIGRANT became the quintessential modern version. But, it was the tremendous promise that he hailed from Michałów’s most successful mare line, that made this inevitable.
As a sire, *EMIGRANT endows his foals with the ethereal beauty and desert dryness that is a gift from his granddam Emigracja. He also passes on his type and quality that the Saklawi I horses are known for. Perhaps, however, what makes *EMIGRANT so unique is the solid structure, including substance, flat bone and short cannons he will impart on his foals. He also provides superb motion and athleticism, no doubt a genetic gift from racing queens Arra (through his sire Ararat) and Estokada. From a breeder’s perspective, it is this rare combination of abilities that is so valuable.

*EMIGRANT’s arrival at Manny Vierra’s Valley Oak Arabians, in California, is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in this decorated stallion’s career. After many hours of relentless negotiations, Vierra and good friend Raymond Mazzei were able to persuade the Poles to part with one of their greatest prizes, a decision made possible by the large number of daughters and his son Gaspar left on Polish soil.

*EMIGRANT’s time has come again, and this time for an entirely new group of breeders and mares. Few stallions receive such opportunities and accolades, but there is only one *EMIGRANT — a unique stallion with an unparalleled dam line.
